ARTICLES

Article হলো এমন একটি Determiner, যা সাধারণত Noun-এর আগে বসে। ইংরেজি ভাষায় Article প্রধানত তিন ধরনের—

1. Indefinite Article: A, An
2. Definite Article: The
3. Zero Article: যেখানে কোনো Article ব্যবহৃত হয় না

1) Indefinite Article (A / An)

যে Article-এর দ্বারা কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে না বুঝিয়ে সাধারণভাবে কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বোঝায়, তাকে Indefinite Article বলা হয়।

উদাহরণ

• A man
• A flower
• A book
• An egg
• An umbrella
• An apple

উপরের উদাহরণগুলোতে A / An কোনো নির্দিষ্ট man, flower, book, egg, umbrella, apple-কে বোঝায়নি; বরং সাধারণভাবে বোঝানো হয়েছে। তাই A এবং An হলো Indefinite Article।

Note: Singular Countable Noun-এর আগে সাধারণত A বা An বসে।

Uses of Article “A”

1. ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ (consonant) দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দের আগে A বসে

উদাহরণ:

• A boy
• A woman
• A cat
• A dog
• A pen
• A pencil
• A tiger
• A lion
• A garden
• A book
• A flower

2. স্বরবর্ণ (vowel) দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দের উচ্চারণ যদি “yu” বা “wa” হয়, তাহলে A বসে

উদাহরণ:

• A ewe
• A unicorn
• A European
• A university
• A union
• A uniform
• A one-day tour

3. “One” অর্থে A ব্যবহৃত হয়

উদাহরণ:

• A kilo
• A dozen
• A hundred

4. “Per” অর্থে A ব্যবহৃত হয়

উদাহরণ:

• Three feet make a yard.
• Rice sells at Rs. 45 a kilo.
• Edible oil sells at Rs. 120 a litre.
• Oranges sell at Rs. 72 a dozen.

5. নির্দিষ্ট নয় এমন কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে অস্পষ্টভাবে বোঝাতে A বসে

উদাহরণ:

• Police is in search of a Tapas Kumar.
• One day a Tarapada came to meet me.

6. পেশা (Profession) বোঝাতে A ব্যবহৃত হয়

উদাহরণ:

• Dipak is a teacher.
• Lila is a lawyer.
• Madhav is a businessman.
• Tulika is a painter.

7. কোনো প্রাণী বা বস্তুকে সাধারণ শ্রেণির প্রতিনিধি হিসেবে বোঝাতে A বসে

উদাহরণ:

• A horse is a noble animal.
• A hare is a timid animal.
• A student should be industrious.
• A dog is faithful to its master.

8. “Like” অর্থে A ব্যবহৃত হয়

উদাহরণ:

• You are a Vidyasagar, I see.
• She thinks she is a Lady Macbeth.
• Here comes a Daniel to judgement.

9. little, few, great many ইত্যাদির সঙ্গে A ব্যবহার হতে পারে

উদাহরণ:

• A little learning is a dangerous thing.
• A little money is left over.
• A few students can answer this.
• A great many people came to the stadium.

10. What-এর পরে বিস্ময় বোঝাতে A বসে

উদাহরণ:

• What a dull boy you are!
• What a wonderful sight!

11. Proper Noun-কে Common Noun হিসেবে ব্যবহার করলে A বসে

উদাহরণ:

• He is a Newton.
• She is a Cleopatra.
• He is a Shakespeare.

Uses of Article “An”

1. স্বরবর্ণ (vowel) দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দের আগে An বসে

উদাহরণ:

• An egg
• An orange
• An umbrella
• An elephant
• An idea
• An apple
• An idiot

2. ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ দিয়ে শুরু হলেও উচ্চারণ যদি vowel-এর মতো হয়, তাহলে An বসে

উদাহরণ:

• An hour
• An honest man
• An honorary post
• An heir

3. “Like” অর্থে An ব্যবহৃত হয়

উদাহরণ:

• Your are an Iswarchandra, I see.
• He thinks she is an Eva Braun.

4. নির্দিষ্ট নয় এমন কোনো ব্যক্তিকে অস্পষ্টভাবে বোঝাতে An ব্যবহৃত হয়

উদাহরণ:

• An Illias came to meet Ajoy.
• An Idris Ali told him to be present there.

5. কিছু abbreviations-এর আগে An বসে, যখন উচ্চারণ vowel sound দিয়ে শুরু হয়

উদাহরণ:

• An MLA
• An MP
• An MRS.
• An MD
• An MS

• An X-ray

• An MSc

2) Definite Article (The)

যে Article-এর দ্বারা কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বোঝায়, তাকে Definite Article বলা হয়।

উদাহরণ

• The boy
• The flower
• The book
• The egg
• The umbrella
• The apple

উপরের উদাহরণগুলোতে The সাধারণভাবে কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে না বুঝিয়ে নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু বোঝাচ্ছে। তাই The হলো Definite Article।

Uses of Article “The”

1. কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বোঝাতে The বসে

উদাহরণ:

• I know the boy who came here.
• The book is out of print now.

2. আগে বলা হয়েছে এমন কোনো কিছুকে দ্বিতীয়বার বলতে The বসে

উদাহরণ:

• The baby cried.
  এখানে The baby বলতে আগে যে baby-এর কথা বলা হয়েছে, তাকেই বোঝানো হয়েছে।

3. Singular noun-এর মাধ্যমে সমগ্র শ্রেণি বা জাতি বোঝাতে The বসে

উদাহরণ:

• The dog is a faithful animal.
• The bamboo is a kind of grass.

4. সমুদ্র, মহাসাগর ও উপসাগরের নামের আগে The বসে

উদাহরণ:

• The Bay of Bengal
• The Indian Ocean

5. নদী ও খালের নামের আগে The বসে

উদাহরণ:

• The Ganges
• The Jamuna
• The Padma

6. দ্বীপপুঞ্জের নামের আগে The বসে

উদাহরণ:

• The Andamans

7. মরুভূমির নামের আগে The বসে

8. পর্বতমালার নামের আগে The বসে

11. প্রকৃতিতে একটিমাত্র আছে এমন বস্তু বা সত্তার আগে The বসে

12. বিখ্যাত ভাস্কর্য, অট্টালিকা, সেতু, স্মৃতিসৌধ ইত্যাদির আগে The বসে

13. জাতিসম্প্রদায়, ধর্মীয় সম্প্রদায় ও রাজনৈতিক দলের নামের আগে The বসে

15. বাদ্যযন্ত্রের নামের আগে The বসে

17. Superlative Degree-এর আগে The বসে

18. Ordinal Number-এর আগে The বসে

উদাহরণ:

19. Comparative Degree-র আগে অনেক সময় The ব্যবহার হয়

উদাহরণ:

• The more, the merrier.
• The more you get, the more you want.
• The sooner, the better.

20. বিশেষ শ্রেণি বোঝাতে adjective-এর আগে The বসে

উদাহরণ:

• The poor are our votebank.
• The rich are not always dishonest.

21. কিছু noun-এর সঙ্গে The বসে নির্দিষ্ট অর্থ বোঝাতে

উদাহরণ:

• Amal has joined the Navy.
• Deepshikha has joined the Armed Police.
• Rajjak will join the Bar.

22. শরীরের অংশ বোঝাতে অনেক সময় The ব্যবহৃত হয়

উদাহরণ:

• The teacher caught him by the arm.
• Rabi pulled the puppy by the tail.
• Tapas gave me a blow on the face.

23. Inner nature বা মানসিক দিক বোঝাতে The ব্যবহৃত হয়

উদাহরণ:

• The mother in her did not tolerate the incident.
• Control the beast in you.
• Students should not keep their parents in the dark.

The Cases Where No Article Is Used

1. Proper Noun-এর আগে সাধারণত কোনো Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal.
• Gopal is a good boy.

ব্যতিক্রম:

• A Gopal came to meet you.
• The Rabindra Setu is a wonder of the world.

2. Abstract Noun-এর আগে সাধারণত Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• Honesty is the best policy.
• Kindness is a great virtue.

ব্যতিক্রম:

• The honesty of Mamata is above question.
• The kindness of Paltu is known to all.

3. Common Noun সাধারণ অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হলে Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• Government should stop this terrorism.
• No man is immortal.

ব্যতিক্রম:

• The Government of party cadres must resign.
• I like the man in blue and white.
• Gold is a yellow metal.

4. Material Noun-এর আগে সাধারণত Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• Gold is a yellow metal.
• Coal is called black diamond.

ব্যতিক্রম:

• The gold of Kolar mine is of the best quality.
• The coal of Raniganj is low priced.

5. Plural Countable Noun-এর আগে সাধারণত Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• Children are the most beautiful flowers.
• Students obey their teachers.

ব্যতিক্রম:

• Where are the children?
  অর্থাৎ আমাদের ছেলেমেয়েরা
• Where are the students?
  অর্থাৎ আমাদের ছাত্রছাত্রীরা

6. Meals-এর নামের আগে সাধারণত Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• I take lunch at 1 p.m. regularly.
• Your dinner is ready.

ব্যতিক্রম:

• Bijoy had an early lunch today.
• Amir was pleased with the nice dinner.

7. Language-এর নামের আগে Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• Bengali is a sweet language.
• English is used in almost all the countries of the world.

8. Relation বোঝানো শব্দের আগে সাধারণত Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• Mother has returned from her office.
• Sister has gone to her in-laws.

9. “Cook” এবং “Nurse” যদি পরিবার-সংক্রান্ত অর্থে ব্যবহার হয়, তাহলে Article লাগে না

উদাহরণ:

• Cook is absent since Monday.
• Nurse is attending my mother.

10. খেলাধুলার নামের আগে সাধারণত Article বসে না

উদাহরণ:

• Sourav played cricket.
• Dhyanchand played hockey.
• Sania plays tennis.
• Moumita plays chess.

11. School, college, university, temple, mosque, church, hospital, jail, bed ইত্যাদির আগে Article বসে না, যদি primary purpose বোঝানো হয়

উদাহরণ:

• I go to school every day.
  (পড়া বা পড়ানোর উদ্দেশ্যে)
• Shila goes to bed very early.
  (ঘুমানোর উদ্দেশ্যে)
• Subodh is still in hospital.
  (চিকিৎসার কারণে)

ব্যতিক্রম:

• The school is at arm’s length from my house.
• They met each other at the temple.
• Nilu went to the hospital to see Subodh.

1. Certain fixed phrases-এর সঙ্গে Article বসে না

1. Tales of Bhola Grandpa

Bhola Grandpa and his wife lived at the western end of our village. A large bokal tree overshadowed their hut. In the bokal tree lived a small troop of monkeys. Bhola Grandpa and his wife did not mind it.

One moonlit night, we were returning from a festival. The road was long and foggy. I was riding on the village chowkidar’s shoulders. Suddenly, Bhola Grandpa let out a loud wail.

Bhola Grandpa instantly climbed up a nearby banyan tree. The tiger roared and circled the tree about a hundred times. Then it settled down under a bush without taking its eyes off him.

2. All About a Dog

I was travelling in a bus. It was a bitterly cold night, and even at the far end of the bus the east wind cut like a knife. The bus stopped and two women and a man got in together and filled the vacant places.

“…and address,” said the woman. She had evidently expected the challenge and knew the reply.

The conductor turned on the pavement, went to the driver to have a talk with him. Another bus, the last on the road, went by.

The feather from the raven’s breast falls on the stubble lea, the acorns near the old crow’s nest fall pattering down the tree.

4. A Day in the Zoo

The average zoo day begins just before dawn. The sky will be slightly tinged with yellow when you are awakened by the birdsong. You can hear a robin singing. You hear the rich, fruity, slightly hoarse cries of the touracos, and a joyful blackbird.

Upstairs in the house, the parrots and parakeets salute you with a cacophony of sounds. Suku, the grey parrot, cries, “I’m a very fine bird.” A host of quick-footed, bright-eyed mongooses patter busily around their cages. The hairy armadillo lies on its back.

As you lie in bed, you watch through the window the moon separating itself from the shadow of the trees. You hear the lions cough. Soon it will be dawn and the chorus of birds will take over; the cold morning air will ring with song.

5. All Summer in a Day

The children were eager to see the sun. They had been on Venus all their lives. They had been only two years old when the sun last came out. They had long since forgotten the colour and the heat of how it really was.

The children stood at the doorway to the underground houses until it was raining hard. Then they closed the doors and heard the gigantic sound of the rain falling everywhere.

Conclusion

Articles ইংরেজি Grammar-এর একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ। A, An, The কোথায় বসবে, আর কোথায় বসবে না—এই নিয়মগুলো ভালোভাবে বুঝতে পারলে sentence-এর correctness অনেক বেড়ে যায়। নিয়মের সাথে examples বারবার practice করলে article ব্যবহার আরও সহজ হয়ে যায়।
