The Art of Letter Writing: A Comprehensive Guide
June 24, 2026 | by anisurrahaman235f@gmail.com
Though letter writing is slowly becoming a forgotten art in the modern age of computers, the internet, and mobile phones, its artistic and personal value remains immense.
Letters can primarily be divided into two main categories: Private Letters and Official Letters.
- Private Letters: Also known as personal letters, these are written to friends, family members, and relatives. Social letters and letters of invitation also fall under this category.
- Official Letters: These are formal letters where strict formatting rules and professional decorum must be maintained. Examples include letters of application, complaint letters, and letters to the editor.
Below are several worked-out examples covering both personal and official letter formats.
1. Letter to a Friend Who Has Just Lost His Mother
[Sender’s Address]
[Date]
My dear Mihir,
First of all, I ask for God’s blessings for you. All of us are with you during this difficult time.
Just two days ago, I heard the sad news of your mother’s passing. It is deeply shocking to me as well, and I can only imagine what you are going through. In such a situation, there is no language of consolation known to me that can ease your pain. But I can tell you that God is always with us. He has given you this profound sorrow, perhaps to give you the strength to face life later.
At present, you need to be courageous to face this tragic situation. I have every reason to believe that you will eventually overcome this grief.
Take care of yourself and your elders.
Your friend,
Pranab

Dear Mridul,
For a long time, we have been separated from each other, mostly because of our current academic commitments. I hope you are doing well in every respect. I am doing well too.
I am writing to joyfully invite you to my house on the 15th of January this year to attend the marriage ceremony of my elder sister. You simply have to come and stay with us for at least three days. I believe it will be a great pleasure for all of us to reunite. I am confident that you cannot be indifferent to my heartfelt invitation, and I am eagerly waiting for that day to arrive.
With regards to the elders and lots of love to you.

[Sender’s Address]
[Date]
My dear Rakesh,
I hope you are doing well. It has been a long time since we were able to meet each other, but please do not think I have forgotten you even for a moment. Whenever I am enjoying myself, I miss your presence dearly.
Last Monday, I went with some friends to see a movie in a cinema hall for the first time in my life. It was the classic film ‘Sholay,’ starring Amitabh, Dharmendra, and Jaya. I had heard a lot about the film, and finally getting the chance to watch it on the big screen was an absolute delight. Those three hours were pure pleasure. Everything was praiseworthy—the acting, the plot of the story, and its perfect presentation. I was completely charmed. We will discuss it more when we meet.
Take care of yourself and your studies.
Your friend,
Rohit

[Sender’s Address]
[Date]
My dear Sudhin,
With God’s blessings, I hope you are doing well. Your college and hostel life has just begun, and I hope you have adjusted yourself well to the new atmosphere.
I heard you received a new mobile phone from our parents. That is wonderful news. Now you will be able to communicate with everyone easily. However, I want you to be alert. Sometimes, a mobile phone can become a dangerous addiction and a tool for misuse, which will inevitably hamper your studies. Therefore, please use it responsibly and only when you truly need it. I believe you understand exactly what I mean to say.
With love,
Your elder brother,
Sayantan

[Sender’s Address]
[Date]
My dear Brother,
I hope, with the blessings of God, you are doing well in your hostel. I know you are deeply concentrated on your exam preparations, but at the same time, you must keep a close watch on your health. It is incredibly vital.
Try to rise early from your bed. Waking up early maintains both physical and mental fitness. After waking up, try to walk gently for at least half an hour. The fresh morning wind is incredibly charming and largely free from polluting elements. Regular morning walks will help you avoid indigestion issues and will greatly improve your concentration in your studies. Please keep my words in mind and keep looking forward.
With love,
Your elder brother,
Anubhav

[Sender’s Address]
[Date]
My dear Mallika,
I hope you are doing well. I am fine, though I am fully immersed in my studies as the final examinations are knocking at the door.
Reading and writing all day long has made things feel a bit suffocating lately. So, to get some mental relief, I decided to take a break and write this letter to you. I suspect you are going through the exact same situation. Last year, I couldn’t score very good marks, making this year a real challenge for me. I am putting in hearty labor for my preparation, and I am constantly praying to God to keep me physically fit during the exams.
Wishing great results for both of us. Take care of yourself.
Your loving friend,
Anushka
